Re: Running Brothers Keeper 5.2G on Windows 7

First off, why aren't there more recent posts on here. Most, esp. for BK 5.2G is from 2007 and is about running on Windows Vista. Only rare mention of Windows 7.

I am running BK 5.2G under Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit. There are some issues (it doesn't display any changed info right away and have to go to someone else and then back to see changes) but otherwise runs well.

Note that I said 32-bit. I was fortunate to buy my laptop when Win 7 was new and mostly coming in the 32-bit variety.

Windows (or Vista or XP) 64-bit will NOT run DOS or Win 3.1 era programs natively, i.e you'd have to install an XP or other emulator to run the app under it.

P.S. I forgot to mention that I also prefer 5.2G to 6.x, like many others have stated. I started with BK for DOS around 1990 and then went to 5.2. I have tried 6.x several times but it is too complex for my tastes and needs, and as well the migration is problematic.

I upgraded to BK 6 while still running my windows Vista and had no problems at all. At first I kept my BK 5 as well, because there were things I liked better about it, but in time, I found I had all that and more with BK 6. Three months ago I got a new computer with Windows 7- 64 bit. I expected problems changing from the 32 bit to 64 bit. It was one of the few programs on my computer that made the transition smoothly. Some of my Virus protections had more trouble in the transition then BK 6. I am very happy!!

Right. I suspect that BK6 is true Windows compatible and therefore runs just fine on 64-bit while BK5 was Win-3.1 (which itself was based on DOS)-compatible and would not run on 64-bit.

I also run MYM (Managing Your Money) a DOS program and am glad that my laptop has Win 7 32-bit, and plan to stick with BK5.2G at least for the foreseeable future.

My other computers are XP and Vista 32-bit.

As I recall, and forgive me, my memory is not that good, but I believe there was an upgrade to the BK 5.2 program after the windows 3.1 that made it compatible with the newer Windows programs. I started out with the BK 4 programs and have upgraded with Mr. Steed along the way. I love his program, I love the price (reasonable) and now am enjoying the BK 6. It worked well with my vista and now the Windows 7 64 bit.

As I said, I started with BK for DOS in 1990 which came on HD 3.5" floppies. Don't know which version # it had. Over the years, Mr. Steed upgraded BK to a Windows version and kept enhancing it to 5.2G before starting on BK6.

Still, 5.2 is basically a DOS/Win 3.1 prog underneath which is why it doesn't run on 64-bit Windows -- which doesn't support the DOS command prompt window either which I use every day.

Yes, I believe it was around 1990, give a year or two, that I was using the Version #4. It was on a floppy and at that time you could store the data on a new floppy and keep the program seperate. That was ok, until you ran out of space on the floppy and then you had to install it on the hard drive. We have come a long way in genealogy software since those days, thank goodness. I am also grateful that we graduated from DOS to windows. Life on the computer is so much simplier now .............

I need some help.
Just in the last half of may or mid june I bought the new version 7 registered version.
I had a reg version 6.2 or something like that before.and have the registration # for that one, but do not have the #s for this one.
We went through the wildfire in Wa last week. I live in Paterow. My cd and desktop went up in smoke.
I need to get in touch with John to see if he has my records and can send me another cd. I tried downloading the ver 7 from the net and it says it is 6 or something. One thing that I really like about the 7 is that I can create a file for my Johnson project and put my Johnson info in it. I can later create a final file and delete what the files that I no longer want.

BK and GenSmarts

Hello BK users,
Have you used a program called GenSmarts? I used it together with BK ver. 6.0, but have learned that it is currently not compatible with BK 7.0. GenSmarts is a research tool...it's handy, since it links to your genealogy database and generates research suggestions. You can add and remove suggestions, mark them complete, and use the list of suggestions to suggest research options. It's not essential but can be helpful.

I emailed GenSmarts tech support and learned that they won't be adding support for BK ver 7.0 unless they get more requests for that upgrade, from BK users. If you want to use gensmarts and BK ver 7 then please email support@gensmarts.com to request adding support for BK version 7 and future upgrades. BTW I don't work for the company; I'm just an individual user.

BK 7 will not convert from BK6

I downloaded BK7 and did the convert routine. Time after time I get an error message that it cannot find *.DT6 files in the location specified. They are there. I use BK6 every day; the files are there. I copied all of those *.DT6 files to a external hard drive. The program cannot find them there either. I am administrator on my computer and operate under that designation. Please help.

how to change file locations

Hello,
I have inherited a relative's data and program. I loaded the program (BK5) on my computer. I have the photos and data libraries on the desktop. And, when I enter the program, it looks for pictures in a location that doesn't even exist.

Does anyone know how to change the file locations within the program so I can just access the data and photos where the actually are?

Have you contacted the program creator and programmer, John Steed? He is always extremely helpful when I ask him for help. I'd recommend asking John Steed directly.

I hope you solved your problem.

Want to Create a GEDCOM from old versions of Brothers Keeper?

I was unable to update my Brothers Keeper programs to one that would create GEDCOM files and unable to find a program to do it, so I wrote my own program to do that.
My BK version was 4.5 from 1990 so no wonder it couldn't do it.
I would love to help someone out that can't create a GEDCOM with their BK software.
Mine works with BK that uses files like this:
locatefl.bk4
messfile.bk4
marrfile.bk4
famlfile.bk4

Where to include a child born to one parent (mother) and adopted by husband

If a child is born to the mother previous to the marriage (with a different man) and then adopted by the woman's husband (after marriage) which family should the child be entered into using Brother's Keeper program...?
And should the child's entry show the surname (mother's) at time of birth, or the surname of the adoptive father..?

Do you know the father of the child? If so, you can add the father to the mother as you would a spouse. Add the Married Event, but in the Married event dropdown, you can select 'Not Married'. Then you can add the child so both birth parents are linked for the child. If the father is not known, you can still add the child to the mother without a father.

You can add a father and select the Find at the top menu line, then Parent Type, which is at the bottom of the list, and select from there.
You can select Add Parents from a person's record to add a 2nd set of Parents.

In the Names tab, you can add birth name or adopted name, whichever you are not using for the person. I would probably use the Adopted name because that is how the person is known, but the Names tab should have the birth name, as well as in the Notes tab. Notes tab is nice for having everything in one place when you have change of names / parents.
